Artistic Lighting 101

by Jenn Lee on Jun.01, 2010, under Blog

When it comes to photography, John Adkins has been my teacher/mentor as well as I am his biggest fan. He is a wonderful photographer that has an eye for composition as well as lighting. I look at his compositional lighting as an art. He sculpts the light like a sculptor sculpts clay. I have been after him for quite awhile about teaching a class on lighting and now finally he is going to do it! If you are a local interested in photography as a hobby or even considering it as a business interest…this is a class you don’t want to miss.

Do your eyes glaze over at the thought of using your flash on camera?

Do you want to learn how to create directional, beautiful light with your off camera flash?

Are you intimidated by using your flash off camera?

If so, you will definitely want to attend my first, Off Camera Flash Photography Workshop!

Many folks have been requesting for some time that I do a workshop covering off camera flash techniques and with the help of a few friends and some positive motivation, we are finally in the running.

In this workshop we will be covering all of the gear needed to use your flash off camera, how to balance ambient light with flash and how to modify those little flashes to look like the big boys.  Mastering off camera flash is much easier than you think and will help you take your photography to the next level.  Its so easy even I can do it!

If this sounds like something you would be interested in, then check out the details below and I look forward to seeing you there!  If you have any questions about the Workshop, please sound off in the comments sections below or feel free to email me.

Be sure to bring your camera and gear!  If you’re new to the new off camera flash world and don’t have all the goodies yet, don’t be afraid to show up as we will have plenty of gear for you to check out and experiment with.  Also, this is not a gear specific class, meaning that this can be done with Canon, Nikon, Sony, Pentax and even point and shoot cameras!!!

Mother Nature is an Artist

by Jenn Lee on May.17, 2010, under Blog

My eldest daughter is about to become a mother herself. With the impending due date coming in a few months, John asked Jess if she was ready to pose for some maternity portraits. We had a great time with the shoot, mind you, how could you not with such a beautiful mother to be?Over the years as I was creating my own family, I have often been amazed at the entire process of pregnancy. Okay not the morning sickness, back aches or excessive bloating as the babies pushed all my internal organs around to make room for themselves. But honestly, the process of something so minutely tiny to be seen only under a microscope, forming into a complete little person…simply amazing.

In a way…it’s not unlike an artist’s sculpture. You start with something so basic and unshaped and over the gestational period, see arms, legs, hands, feet, etcetera create an amazing mix of mommy and daddy. Natures sculpting can be seen through everything around us from the growth of flowers and plants, to the birth of animals as well as babies. How amazing life is in it’s ability to sculpt such beauty. Life and the creation of new life, is truly art…in this artist’s eyes.

Pet portrait of Rudy

Pet Portrait of Rudy - The Artist's Eyes by Jenn Lee

I had the pleasure of working on another pet portrait this week. I chose to start offering my pet portraits because our pets become a part of our family. I feel these portraits immortalize our beloved family members whether they are still with us, or once they are gone.

All of my art whether portraits, wall art or sculpture are created out of ECO friendly materials. I have focused solely on conservation in my own use of materials. These pet portraits are created on handmade canvases created out of all recycled paper products. They are as strong as a store bought canvas, as well as as thick. I also custom size these canvases to fit standard frame sizes available at most framing stores.

This particular portrait was of a wonderful dog named Rudy. Rudy was a beloved pet that passed away several years ago.

The biggest pleasure I get is when I complete a project such as this and see the expression from the client. That is when I know I captured the essence of their loved one. With that being said, here is Rudy! He’s one handsome doggie!

Portrait Painting

by Jenn Lee on Feb.11, 2010, under Blog

The past few days I have been cooped up inside due to weather here in Kentucky. I try to keep my creative energies flowing even with the lack of sunshine and the howling snowpocalypse outside.

Yesterday I completed the Iron Horses painting that I posted here, and it turned out exactly as I envisioned which tickled me to death! Today I added the last touches to a portrait I did for fun of my eldest daughter Jessica….

Pet Portraits

by Jenn Lee on Jan.16, 2010, under Blog

Today Pet Research Blog added my pet portraits to their store! I have also updated the link on my Pet Portraits page at the bottom. When you click the link it will take you to the order form and prices.

It is sad to know over six thousand animals die each year of neglect as well as hearing the estimated statistics HSUS (Humane Society of the United States) have come up with. They say that shelters take in six to eight thousand dogs and cats a year, which approximately three to four million are euthanized.

Though there are quite a few shelters, they have limited space and resources. Due to this it is very important to them to have community support. Therefore, I am very proud to be joining with Pet Research on this project which will be donating 15% of the proceeds to non profit animal support organizations.
