Scarlet Macaw

by Jenn Lee on Mar.14, 2010, under Blog

Scarlet Macaws are such beautiful birds to me, with a plumage painted with all the colors of a rainbow. Scarlet Macaw’s average between 2.5′ to 3′ in length from top of their heads to the tip of their tails, which more than half of their length is their tail plumage. Their feathers are mostly scarlet, but their wings and under plumage are rainbows of blues, yellow and green.

These birds originated in the American Tropics, ranging in territory from between Southern Mexico, Peru, Bolivia to Brazil. Their average lifespan is 40 to 50 years though some have lived up to 75 years in captivity. Due to habitat destruction and worldwide trade, these wild parrots are slowly declining in numbers due to hunting, poaching, and the destruction of habitat through deforestation.

I decided to create a 3D painting of a Scarlet Macaw in dedication of this beautiful species and to raise awareness in its steady decline in the wild. I also want to bring your attention to a great organization working on the preservation of parrots worldwide called World Parrot Trust. These birds are a perfect example of living art…in this artist’s eyes.
