Creative Outlet through Digital Photography
by Jenn Lee on Jun.07, 2010, under Blog
With the kiddos being out of school on summer break, I have been trying to keep them busy with fun projects of their own. Today was one of those days when it was hard to occupy my youngest son so I decided to do some creative photography with him….

Every once in awhile I have to admit it’s nice to break out of my usual artistic medium and play around with other ways to use my creativeness. I love playing with photography as a secondary tool as a creative outlet.
With today’s digital cameras you can take as many shots as you want and have the instant gratification as soon as you upload them to your computer. My tool of choice is a Nikon D70. It may not be the best digital camera or the newest but it has several great little tools embedded into it that makes it better than some of the newer cameras. If I was going to recommend a nice digital camera to play with…this would be it.
When you are sitting at home with the kiddos this summer and can’t get them to stop climbing the walls…get them to strike a pose for you…besides nice updated portraits of them to share with family, you can get creative and make digitally manipulated photos like this! Not only will you have a little creative fun, your kids will leave you alone for awhile after posing! Mu-ha-ha-ha….
If you don’t see what was so creative about the photo above, other than the fact it looks like my son is falling out of the sky…check out the original below…

All you need is a photo editing program like Adobe Photoshop or if you are looking for a free program, try GIMP. You can find tutorials online for either program and even some on Youtube. After you get the hang of it, you can have a lot of fun as well as this being a great creative outlet…in this artist’s eyes.
Modern Technology
by Jenn Lee on Jun.02, 2010, under Blog
This is off topic compared to my usual jibber jabber, but as I forewarned you readers…this blog is my place for general gibberish in the day to day life of an artist, so with that being said, I have come to notice how dependent I have become on modern technology lately. The things we take for granted as luxuries are becoming quite numerous as time goes by. I am sure a lot of us say we are not dependent at the least, but think carefully about that answer…
We have computers, cell phones, TIVO, DVRs or GPS systems, amongst the many other things I could list. I can remember when I didn’t have a cell phone. It was something you saw on television or movies. Now I cannot seem to leave the house without feeling slightly naked without it. I grab the keys, my purse and yes…my cell phone.
How many of you TIVO or DVR your favorite television shows? How upset are you when you don’t remember to set the record function before you leave for the day or evening? I bet more than most would like to admit! Gone are the days of BETA or VHS, now every home has a DVR or TIVO recorder, indeed gone are the days of brick sized ribbon format media storage.
Who has a paper map in their car? Alright, let me rephrase that, when was the last time you looked at one? It doesn’t count if you have one and you don’t open it up for reference! In my SUV, the computerized voice of Darth Vader boldly instructs me on my trips as of late via my GPS. “Prepare to make the jump to hyperspace”…sounds off as I enter the expressway. I look to that pocket sized virtual map to lead me on the correct path…gone are the fold up maps that if I remember correctly…sometimes caused some close call accidents while driving and navigating!
How about that trusty computer? I can remember my first computer. In fact I can remember putting together my first computer….okay I will even confess I remember first taking apart then putting back together my first computer he-he. What can I say? I wanted to know what was inside and how it worked! I did learn what I needed to know…eventually…and as the members of my household can attest to, I can build, rebuild or repair the computers in my house. *Sigh* speaking of which, I will be doing some repairs to my own computer in the very near future as well.
Back to topic though…I use my computer, err let me rephrase that, the internet for my go to place for just about anything I need information on. I can’t recall the last time I used a phone book, a dictionary or an encyclopedia. My children use the internet for educational references as well as entertainment. If I need a recipe I Google, if I need a DIY project explained I Google it, if I need information about prescriptions, cars, computers, clothes etc I Google it. Yes I love Google! But seriously…how much do you rely on your computer/internet? It is where you are reading my blog too isn’t it?
Modern technology has gone from luxury, to things we seem unable to go without in our day to day lives. I have to wonder where we will be in another decade? what will be the new inventions in technology? What will our children or our childrens children be…unable to go without in their day to day lives? Modern technology is a giant unstoppable wave of human creativity that knows no boundary…in this artist’s eyes.
Artistic Lighting 101
by Jenn Lee on Jun.01, 2010, under Blog
When it comes to photography, John Adkins has been my teacher/mentor as well as I am his biggest fan. He is a wonderful photographer that has an eye for composition as well as lighting. I look at his compositional lighting as an art. He sculpts the light like a sculptor sculpts clay. I have been after him for quite awhile about teaching a class on lighting and now finally he is going to do it! If you are a local interested in photography as a hobby or even considering it as a business interest…this is a class you don’t want to miss.
Do your eyes glaze over at the thought of using your flash on camera?
Do you want to learn how to create directional, beautiful light with your off camera flash?
Are you intimidated by using your flash off camera?

Spinning…
by Jenn Lee on May.26, 2010, under Blog
Ever have those days that you feel like you can’t get focus? Days like you feel like you are spinning like a child’s toy top, unable to steady yourself and focus on tasks at hand? I definitely have those moments being a mother to four and self employed business owner.
There are those days…you know what I’m talking about, admit it…those days when you look at your schedule and you feel overwhelmed and out of balance. You know what you need to do because you do this routine every day, right? But you sit there, like someone replaced your routine with a strangers..you feel disconnected, right?
A friend of mine recently gave me some well needed advice. He said, “Being productive is a hard habit to get into and a very easy one to get out of. Try setting a very small set of daily goals that you MUST do. Don’t make a to do list, make a MUST do today list then do them. After you start getting back into the swing, add another item to the list.”
I have to admit, it’s very sound advice as well as easily comprehended by my logical side. How overwhelming can it look when you stand at the base of a mountain you need to climb? If you shrink down that mountain of goals, it’s more like taking that walking path up the mountain vs straight up the front. Putting one step in front of another, up that pathway, is way more manageable.
So when life becomes unbalanced and you feel like you can’t get your focus because you are spinning like a top…sit down, take a deep breath, think of one thing you can accomplish today…just one…and focus on that task. Once you are finished with that task is when you figure out the next task you can accomplish. Putting one foot in front of the other…in time, you will find yourself at the top of your mountain.
Summertime Summertime!
by Jenn Lee on May.24, 2010, under Blog
Here we are at the end of another school year. Off in the distance I can hear my children singing a song that, by far, preceeds them, Alice Cooper’s Schools Out. No more pencils, no more books, no more teachers dirty looks….
With a week left of school counting down, it is quickly turning into a race to figure out my plan of attack for the summer. How do I plan to run a home business and keep my nine and eleven year old educationally stimulated as well as busied with their own itinerary for three whole months of summer?
All across the states the summertime clock is counting down getting ready to release all of our school aged children like the infamous Omaha Landing….I believe even General Colin Powell would find planning this offensive attack plan…a challenge.
Alright, I admit it, I am being a little melodramatic lol. My children truly are wonderful kids. They also deserve a well earned break from their educations for the summer. Even so though, keeping them busy is good for them as well as myself as I balance work with play.
Motivated by the desire to actually get some work done, I do have a plan of attack to beat the summertime restlessness of the natives. When thinking of things to occupy some time, I like to think of things that challenge my kids as well as their minds. Here is a list of a few ideas that maybe will help you along your way with your natives….
- Library: Do a book project with the kiddos. Sure they are probably going to groan at the idea of being asked to read a book, let alone touch one. Figure out a topic that interests them and then create a project with it. Remember those dioramas you did as a kid? It’s a fun and inexpensive project that can challenge them mentally as well as creatively.
- Arts & Crafts: The library is also a great place for finding arts & crafts books as well as the internet or local book stores. Investigate books or internet searches for fun, easy and inexpensive projects for your kids to do. There are a ton of ideas you can find that require little to no supervision for children of all ages.
- Educational Challenges: This is a fun activity that my fiance gets credit for. He being a history buff, loves anything history related. He created these fun challenges for the kids that required them to use every resource available to them except asking for the answers. The reward…a small treat from candy to little toy item. Most of his challenges keep the kids busy for an hour or longer.
- Culinary Fun: This can be a little tricky as far as age appropriated cooking projects. My kids are nine and eleven so they are at an age that allows for a little less supervision for most of the cooking projects. There are a multitude of books available for all ages. Again, you can check with your local library, book stores, if not the internet for these.
- Outdoor activities: From backyard camping to gardening for kids, there are tons of ideas you can find for kids to do outdoors. We have our garden and the kids have gardening projects of their own. Being responsible for growing their own garden teaches responsibility as well as creates a sense of pride in their own garden. Eating the rewards is a reward of its own. Creating a space for them to set up a tent and make their own private campground is also a fun idea. You will be amazed at the amount of time they will spend out in their campground picnicking or just playing.
- Chores: Yes I know…getting kids to do chores is a chore upon itself. If you think outside the box though, you can get kids active in voluntarily doing chores. As a parent I am sure many of you have heard of, tried the “chore list”. Get creative by giving initiatives…rewards or time challenges. Does the bathroom need cleaned? Does the living-room look like the natives went crazy? Did Betty Crocker sneak in and rearrange your kitchen? Play a game with the kids…What would it be like if you were blind? Blindfold them and ask them to clean blindfolded, (Yes it probably won’t get cleaned well, but a reward comes with the best job done). What would it be like if you only had one arm? (Again a challenge but I know you will hear giggles as they try doing this). What would it be like if you had one leg? (Sure, if you have a two story house like ours, you will have to endure the hop hop hop of hopping kids). On your mark, get set, go! Challenge them to clean a room faster than a sibling. (Sure this is one of the hardest challenges to get done even with a reward, but hey…it’s a start). I have to say when they know any reward is coming, no matter how small, they will attempt to do most anything!
Creating ways to keep the natives restless and busy while you work from home is no small task by far, but with a little creativity it can be done and the natives will thank you if by nothing else…allowing you time to focus on work…this is an art…in this artist’s eyes.
