Business Cards
by Jenn Lee on Mar.01, 2010, under Blog
Like a child waiting for Santa to bring presents, I have been anxiously waiting and watching for the UPS truck to show up at my home. Why? Because I ordered new business cards! After looking at my old business cards, I really felt that they didn’t properly enough, describe who I am or what I do.
A business card should clearly state who you are. Your eye should be drawn to the name you carry with your business. Using fancy fonts can sometimes be negative vs. positive on a form of advertisement that is so small. Make sure it is clear and easily readable.
Stating the nature of your business is of course very important. That was a little difficult for me because I consider myself a versatile artist, working with many mediums. It took a little time narrowing down the best verbiage to describe my business without using too many words.
The size and color of fonts can also draw your eye to the information you want more focus on. For example, because I depend so much on my website to provide a place to showcase my portfolio as well as for potential clients to purchase art work, I put more focus on the address of my website. Via my website a person can see my work, make purchases and contact me further for commissioned art.
Originally I was going to create a logo, but I could not come up with one that I felt really stood out or represented me. I chose to add one of my favorite pieces of art. I chose it based on color and level of detail visible in such a small form. I felt it really gave a perfect example of my ECO friendly art work.
I, of course, didn’t forget to add contact information. There are so many things to take into consideration with this. Do you have a physical storefront? Are you a website? Do you want to have potential clients call or email you? All valid considerations when deciding what you want to have accessible on your card.
Remember this will be the form of advertisement that will be transferred from hand to hand representing your business. You want a clear, professional, informative card that with one look can explain your business to each person that you share it with.
With this being said, I hope you have fun designing your business card! It can be seen as art too…in this artist’s eyes.

I love the new cards! And you hit the nail on the head about not letting the design and font distract! Funny how I don’t always think of these things ’til someone points it out, and then it’s so obvious! artbizblog.com also mentions printing postcards with your work and the title and your name on the front, as opposed to just greeting cards. That way your art jumps out at people as they’re idly sifting thru their mail. Of course I come across that nugget of wisdom AFTER I print greeting cards!
